The Seagull -- Anton Chekhov's satiric comedy

Michigan Shakespeare Festival

Date & Times

7/29/2017 2:00:00 PM

Beloved actress Arkadina has it all: beauty, fame, and a wonderful relationship with a famous author, Trigorin. She also has a son in his 20s who dreams of being a playwright, and whose very existence reminds the world that Arkadina is guilty of the one thing actresses must never do: grow older. Anton Chekhov’s satiric comedy The Seagull skewers our views of art and entertainment, and where the two of them combine. A darkly funny domestic comedy set at the turn of the last century, MSF’s 2017 production of The Seagull is from a new original translation. Directed by MSF Artistic Director Janice L Blixt, it features MSF Artistic Associate Janet Haley as Arkadina and MSF favorite Shawn Pfautsch as Trigorin. Rated PG13 due to language or adult subject matter. Talk-back after performances on 7/29, 8/5, 8/13. Bard talk 7:00pm prior to show on 8/12/17.

A young teacher on the first day or work begins to rehearse teaching techniques. The teacher’s thoughts begin to take life. The teacher turns on the TV and is drawn into Schoolhouse Rock! The teacher tries to look over the lesson plan. George and company assure the teacher that, with their help, it will be as easy as one, two, ‘Three Is a Magic Number’. This leads right into ‘Unpack Your Adjective’. The teacher pleads that it is necessary to teach other subjects like Social Studies and the helpers are right there for him with ‘Just a Bill’. Shulie reminds the teacher that ‘The Preamble’ was another shining example of the series’ educational value. The company moves into a rousing ‘Circulation’, detaining the circulatory system through a dance craze. Then it’s back to grammar with one of the favorites of the show ‘Conjunction Junction’. Shulie’s interest is sparked as she sings ‘Interplanet Janet’. The company feels that they have done their duty, and the teacher is ready to teach!
