The Tempest

Directed by MSF Artistic Associate Kauzlaric

Michigan Shakespeare Festival

Date & Times

8/3/2018 7:30:00 PM

Twelve years ago the magician Prospero, rightful ruler of Milan, was usurped by an evil brother and forced to flee into the night with an infant daughter, Miranda, in arms. For over a decade they’ve lived in exile, stranded on a barren island with only the airy spirit Ariel and Caliban, twisted son of a foul hag, for company. But now a mighty tempest has dashed a royal ship on the magician’s shores, putting all of Prospero’s enemies-greedy brothers, conniving rulers, and their loyal courtiers-within reach at last. Will the dark impulses of malice and vengeance rule the day, or will the examples of Miranda and Ariel help shine the light of love and forgiveness into the wounded hollow of Prospero’s heart? One of Shakespeare’s great masterpieces, The Tempest is a stirring fairy tale of depraved royalty, foolish clowns, languishing lovers, and the quest to make things right in the face of terrible wrongs. PG-13. Run time 2hrs. 8/5 and 8/18 Post Show Q & A. 8/11 Bard Talk 7pm

The Rover

Michigan Shakespeare Festival

Date & Times

8/4/2018 2:00:00 PM

Three Englishmen-a soldier, a gentleman, and a stoic-are banished from Cromwell’s England and head to Naples to experience Carnevale and find adventure. They meet three brilliant women-one promised in marriage to a wealthy older man, one promised to the church and one a celebrated courtesan-who challenge and intrigue them. With duels and disguises, set against the backdrop of a nation-wide party, the couples navigate duty, conflict, jealousy, and love in this vibrant 1677 Restoration Comedy. Aphra Behn, English writer, translator, poet, and spy, was one of the first English women to earn her living through writing. Her plays, while extremely popular in her lifetime, were later considered indecent-having a lot to do with her personal reputation-and she fell into obscurity. Rated PG-13. Measure For Measure

Directed by MSF Producing Artistic Director Janice L. Blixt

Michigan Shakespeare Festival

Date & Times

8/4/2018 7:30:00 PM

The Duke of Vienna is a bookish and thoughtful man and the displays of pomp and ceremony necessary for his position are leaving him lost and lonely. He decides to leave his power aside for a while, to take time and walk among his people and leaves the upright and respected Angelo to rule in his place. Angelo quickly begins strict enforcement of many long-forgotten and severe laws without mercy or compassion. When morality and virtue are often disguises for hedonism and vice, and being powerful is not a true measure of character, a nun, a playboy, a pair of lovers, a tapster, a murderer, a constable, and a woman-done-wrong are thrown together to be judged by the duplicitous Angelo. One of Shakespeare’s most problematic comedies, Measure for Measure rings true with legal, social, and political issues we are still battling today, all tempered with a darkly-comic wit. P-13. Performance run time approx. 2hrs. 08/04 and 8/19 Post Show Q & A. 8/17 Bard Talk 7pm
